Activities : Since his college days keenly active in various social and cultural activities. Actively worked with all India Students’ Federation. Through RSS, he dedicated his whole life for nationalism and in the service of nation. In a short political span of ten years, he shouldered the responsibilities of General Secretary of Gujarat Pradesh Bharatiya Janata Party to General Secretary of All India B.J.P. He has wide experience of working in many regions of the country. Also, held special responsibilities in terrorism-hit areas like Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir.
After becoming the Chief Minister of Gujarat on the 7th October 2001 for the first time, has been voted to power in subsequent two consecutive General Elections of the State of Gujarat. Thus he has established the record for being Chief Minister for three consecutive times. Also made a record of retaining the administration for the maximum period.
As per various opinion polls including the opinion poll carried out at national level in February 2008 he had been voted as the best Chief Minister for so many times by the people of Gujarat as well as the people of rest of India. In his tenure he, his administration and the state has been awarded for more than 80 times at national as well as international levels.
Pioneer of the "Panchamrut Scheme" which is the confluence of 'Gyanshakti', 'Jalshakti', 'Urjashakti', ‘Rakshashakti' and 'Janshakti' plans. He also launched 'Karmyogi' campaign for Government employees.
He also made remarkable development in the field of e-governance and for the purpose of online redressal of public grievances he established 'SWAGAT' System (State Wide Attention on Grievances by Application of Technology - SWAGAT). Thus he has given the state the best administration. The pioneer of the 'Jyoti Gram' scheme that has illuminated all the villages of Gujarat by providing round the clock 3-Phaze electricity to more than 18,000 villages. He has also undertaken the project of e-gram vishwagram which aims at providing broad-band connectivity to all the villages ofGujarat.
For prosteting the injustice being done to state with regard to increasing the height of the Narmada Dam he adopted the Gandhiyan way of fasting and satyagrah.
He has been credited for a number of projects launched for the welfare of the people of Gujarat such as Chiranjeevi Yojna to control the mortality rate of mother as well as its new-born, Matruvandana Yojna for taking care of health of pregnant women belonging to economically weaker section, Bal-bhog Yojna for the children who are the victims of mal-nutrition, Beti Bachao Andolan to prevent the killing of female foetus, creating discrimination between boy and girl-child and Kanya Kelwani Abhiyan.
He has done the praise-worthy work to curb down the terrorist activities and provided the state safety and security. He deserves the credit for bringing the rate of crime to its minimum in Gujarat as compared to the crime-rate prevalent in other states of India.
Gujarat has been leading state in India in the establishment of industrial projects, investment and in the industrial development. He has done the praise-worthy work in the field of water management by linking the Narmada with the other rivers of Gujarat through the canals. The Project is named 'Sujalam Suflam'. Pioneer of value added agriculture who inspired modern agriculture by organizing Agriculture Festivals and introducing soil health card system.
For almost 35 years he has travelled extensively to the villages of Gujarat as well as India like a travelling ascetic. He has been extremely popular all over India because of his profound command over phetorics and oratory.
Literary Activity :Has deep interest and insight in the Indian as well as the world literature. Successfully worked as a weekly columnist in news-papers and magazines. Seven books, namely, "Sangharshma Gujarat", "Aankh Aa Dhanya Chhe", " Kelve Te Kelvani", "Acharya Dharma", Jyotipunj" written /translated by him have been published. He has also penned some songs and poems and audio cassettes thereof have also been brought out.
