The Religious Carnage

Hundred plus people were burnt alive in Kollam Kerala because the Muslim Government officials were browbeaten to retract their refusal to permit firecrackers in name of religious sentiments as the officers belonged to a different religion. Elected leaders pressured officials to not to make an issue of the firecrackers and look the other way to allow the use of firecrackers. Illegal chemicals were used in the fire crackers. Prohibited Chinese firecrackers were smuggled in and used.

The reports suggest that elections were used as a crutch to carry out the illegal act with impunity. Rushing of PM with top medical experts to the spot is more like dousing the fire of anguish and resentment and making a political statement than making the guilty brought to books and penalizing all concerned who made law subservient to religion. At such instances giving ex-gratia payments to the dead and injured out of the exchequer is the only thing the hapless government can do. Even this ex gratia payment is not given where the government fails to provide safety and security to large masses and their properties as we saw in the Jat agitation of Haryana. The actual criminals go scot free.

So do we accept that the administrative machinery has become pliant to the religious and political sentiments? If after such a carnage which killed 112 people the temple board still defies all and rejects a ban on the practice despite a High Court Judge moving a petition in the court seeking a ban on this practice, then either the temple is made up of murderers or the law has gone weak in the knee.

Temple’s next argument can be that dying in temple premises will bring salvation to all the departed souls. We are in fact becoming more religious than the religion itself.
