Wear Your Caste On Your Sleeve. Be Proud That You Are SC, ST, Or Dalit

The moment I meet a person who is from any of these categories, I feel humbled. Here stands a person who, because of his birth in today’s India, is a privileged person and who may rise to heights of power, position, profession and people of this country. I am reminded of the most acute competition, defeats and pessimism I and people like me suffer their whole life for a mere existence and here stands a man for whom the whole country and its riches and opportunities are being opened as if by a magic wand.  With a deep longing of somehow becoming such a privileged person I ask my gods to make me one in my next life or the next or the next thereafter because it is never going to end ever. The whole experience is that of standing before the privileged one. ‘He/She is the one’.

In such a case when the reserved category of people in this country are designated privileged ones why it is not a matter of pride for them to say to the world, loud and clear, as to which caste they belong. I am sure at every stage in their life they must have produced their certificate proclaiming their caste or position in society whether they wanted to study, or join government job, or fight elections from reserve constituency. So why not tell the people who you are? Why feel ashamed when one-on-one someone asks you your caste?

How ironical it is that every moment of your life you bask in the privileges which you avail at the cost of every other person in this country, but still feel ungrateful as to not acknowledge his sacrifice for you and still not taking pride in your caste or social status. Why do well settled SC, ST and Dalits still feel so insulted when someone asks them their caste?

Selja Kumari should take up the mantle and empower people from all the reserved categories to take pride in their caste and announce it to the world at the first opportunity. It would bring assimilation more quickly. And will also remove the dichotomy of feeling hurt over discrimination when you live by that discrimination.
