New Delhi: As per the World Giving Index released on Tuesday, Myanmar ahs bagged the first position in the art of giving, followed by US, New Zealand, Canada and Australia at the second, third, fourth and fifth position respectively. India ranked at 106.

It is found that the number of givers in India has substantially decreased in the year 2014 as compared to 2013. And yet, there are more people in India than any other country who help strangers (334 million in 2014), donate money (183 million) and volunteer their time for a good cause (156 million)- this however can be attributed to the large population of India.

The findings were part of a survey conducted by Gallup on 145 nations across the world.

Meenakshi Batra, chief executive of CAF India expressed concern over the decreasing number of people in India engaging in charity work and said: “the relatively low proportion of people who are giving their time or money shows there is still a lot more we must do.”

Reckoning that wealth in India was predicted to grow significantly in the coming years, she said: if this is to benefit the entire Indian population through better standards of living rather than simply widening the gap between rich and poor, we must do more to engage people in addressing development gaps.”

“To do this we will need to build trust in non-government organizations and bring legislation up-to-date to nurture a culture of structured and effective giving. A part of this requires giving more and giving strategically for sustainable long term impact,” Batra added.
