Mumbai: Two Muslim youths have alleged that a police constable inside the Bandra police station told them to go to Pakistan on Saturday morning before they were subjected to serious assault in the custody.

Although a probe has been ordered in the case, the police maintain that the youths were taken to the police station as they assaulted a policeman.

According to a report in The Indian Express, Asif Shaikh and Danish Shaikh, the 19-year-old residents of Mahim, were allegedly assaulted between 2 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. on Saturday. As a result of the thrashing, Asif has been hospitalized having sustained a fracture. Danish too was hurt.

“They had handcuffed me. I was stripped and beaten by eight police officers. At one point, they threatened to use oil as a tool to torture… I cried and begged them to stop. I even questioned about the reasons to beat me up. That agitated them further,” Asif said, recalling the assault.

“The room doesn’t have a CCTV camera. Asif was hit with bamboo sticks and belts on his back, shoulders and legs. He was told to remove his clothes and beaten. He was also handcuffed to a table,” said advocate Rahul Dangle, who has known both boys for more than a decade.

Countering the allegations, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone IX, Satya Narayan said that the boys had been arrested under the charges of assaulting a policeman.

“DCP Zone IX has started his inquiry. He should be given some time to speak to both sides,” said Deven Bharti, Joint Commissioner of Police.

In the meanwhile, a senior BJP leader has rubbished the allegation. He said, “It is incorrect to blow up a single stray incident. Two other Muslims were witnesses in the case. There is no question of the police having asked the boys to go to Pakistan.”
