Chandigarh: The Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar on Thursday while referring to the Dadri lynching incident as “sad” and the “result of a misunderstanding” made a controversial statement which is sure to have lots of repercussions in the country. The chief minister said Muslims can live in India if they refrain from eating beef.

“Muslims can continue to live in this country, but they will have to give up eating beef” because “the cow is an article of faith here.”

Khattar further elucidated that the cow, the Gita and Saraswati are the articles of faith for the majority of Indians while for the Muslims iit will not hurt their religious sentiments f they stop eating beef.

Khattar who is well known as an associate of the RSS, lists the Haryana Gauvansh Sanrakhan and Gausamvardhan legislation as one of the achievements of his governments.

While he maintained that the incident was the result of misunderstanding, he criticized both sides for committing wrongs.

He further likened the incident to a man who sees his mother being killed or his sister being molested, in a way justifying those who killed 52 year old Akhlaq

“Culturally, we are democratic. Democracy has freedoms, but those freedoms have limitations. Freedom of one person is only to the extent that it is not hurting another person,” he told  The Indian Express.

“They can be Muslims even after they stop eating beef, can’t they? It is written nowhere that Muslims have to eat beef, nor is it written anywhere in Christianity that they have to eat beef,” the CM added.

Khattar will complete one year in office as the representative of the BJP government in the state later this month.
