New Delhi: The president of  All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), Asaduddin Owaisi in an interview to the Economic Times spoke at length about his party’s agenda and the challenges faced by the Muslim community. He stressed how the issues concerning education, political representation and security have evaded all political parties. He said that his party aims at politically empowering the community and he believes that the issues of education and security will be solved through this.

Referring to the 2011 Census data, Owaisi said that out of nearly 17.2 crore Muslims in India, 10 crores happen to be youth. He then reflected on the lack of education and problems of unemployment faced by the Muslim community in the country.

“Within urban areas there is 14% unemployment. The problem is more acute in girls' education. No one talks about this. Other parties do not talk about the real issues but just squander time and money on Haj and Iftars,” Owaisi said.

“Remove the Haj subsidy, use that `600 crore for a Muslim girl scholarship,” he added.

When asked whether he is against reservation, the leader said that though he is not against reservation but he wants a demand-driven scholarship instead of reservation.

He later went on to add how religious (Maulana) leaders have done immense harm to the community. He maintained that the real issues bothering the community have been neglected by political parties and as well as religious leaders for their personal gains.

This statement of Owaisi differentiates him from the rest of the herd.
