New Delhi: The ban on the sale of meat for four days of the Jain festival of Paryushan in Mumbai has added to the controversy surrounding beef ban.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Monday agreed for a four-day ban on the sale of meat. Following the ban, meat and poultry shops, as well as the fish market will remain closed during four days on September 10, 13, 17 and 18.  Also, the slaughterhouses in the city have been instructed not to slaughter animals on these four days.

Some people have opposed the ban maintaining that it is unreasonable to deprive a section of society from eating meat on these four days. However, there are also those who have extended their support to the ban.

It has been observed that in some places meat shops remain closed even on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti observed on October 2 every year. Some historians even claim that the use of meat was also banned during Jain fasting during the rule of Mogul emperor Akbar.

At some places, even the sale of an egg is banned in India. For instance, the sale of egg is banned in Haridwar. However, in 2004, the ban was upheld by the Supreme Court of India citing religious sentiments of the people.
