Karnataka: M M Kalburgi, the former vice-chancellor of Hampi University, was shot dead by two unidentified persons at the doorstep of his home on Sunday morning.

Sources reveal that two unidentified persons came to the professor’s residence in Kalyan Nagar in a motorcycle. One person went to the house, knocked on the door and killed Kalburgi as he opened the door while the other person was waiting outside the house.

Mr. Kalburgi was immediately taken to a private hospital and then the District Civil Hospital. However, he was declared dead when he reached the District Civil Hospital.

Similar to Narendra Dhabolkar, the Maharashtra-based rationalist, Kalburgi’s independent views on social and political issues too have irked the right-wing Hindutva groups.

“There was a threat to my father from groups that couldn’t digest his views on caste and communalism. The role of these groups should be probed,” Kalburgi’s daughter Roopadarshi said.

Dhabolkar was killed in the year 2013.
