Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh: Marriages are often considered to bring moments of joy and celebration for the families involved. But many a times the dowry system still prevalent in a large part of the country ruins the happiness that comes with the occasion. However, in an unexpected yet feel good incident in the Singhawalivillage of Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh the entire baarat along with the grooms were taken hostage by the villages for demanding dowry. What is remarkable is that this order came from the village Panchyat itself.

The Panchyat also ordered the groom’s family to pay a fine of Rs 10 lakh.

The grooms Imran and Dilshad, belong to the Wajidpur village of Baraut and were demanding three bikes and Rs 50,000 in cash as a dowry.

As reported by News18, the baaratis were freed only after the last report came in as the grooms’ family was arranging the sum of rupees imposed as fine.

Although many laws have been enacted to curb the menace of dowry the menace of dowry is still rampant especially in the rural parts ofIndia. Such incidents are needed to wipe the evils of dowry from India. Merely enacting laws is not sufficient.
