True that we are born in a free country and we must be thankful for it. While majority of us will not bother to think what would have happened had we not got independence, yet we owe this independence to those who made free India a reality. Director Vinay Jaiswal tries to capture a pre-Independence India with his 6-minute film starring Manoj Bajpai and Raveena Tandon. While the film enacts a hypothetical scene that could have been our reality had we still been ruled by the British.

Though all of us will agree with the importance of living in an Independent India and the sacrifice made by the freedom fighters that made it possible for the country to become independent, the film fails to evoke national pride and ends on a jingoistic note. Thanking the freedom fighters could have been done in a more meaningful way.

Furthermore, the movie is so devoid of any semblance of social reality.

The movie fails to portray the reality of the modern day India. Alternatively, it projects the new Independent India devoid of any social evil. However, no one can deny the rigid caste system is still prevalent in today’s India.

It has not been very long when Mcdonalds in Pune threw out a street kid who was trying to buy a Fanta Float.

Moreover, the oppression of Dalits is an everyday instance in India.

For instance, look at some of the following news headlines

Dalit Teenager Allegedly Burnt Alive in Gujarat

Mahadalit boy burned alive in Bihar village as goat strays into field

Dalit youth brutally killed in Maharashtra for saving Ambedkar song as ringtone

Dalit youth forced to drink urine

Dalit girl beaten up as her shadow falls on high caste muscleman

Also, road rage is the new rage in the Independent India.

Take the case of Salman Khan. And, more recently Hema Malini.

Anyway, enjoy your freedom on this special occasion of the Celebration of Independence. Happy Independence Day!
