Lucknow: The body of a 19-year-old Dalit girl was found in an open field in Sujanganj police station area in Jaunpur, on June 12. Suspecting a case of honour killing, police have arrested the parents, two brothers and two sisters of the victim, a native of the Pratapgarh district.

According to the police, the family decided to kill the girl after “she refused to snap ties with a youth she was having an affair.” The body was discovered some 300 meters away from her residence in Pratapgarh.

According to Sujanganj SO K K Mishra, all the six arrested family members have confessed to the crime. It was the girls’ elder brother who slit her throat with a sharp edged weapon while other family members caught hold of her. Her body was then carried to the neighbouring Jaunpur district and was dumped there in an open field.

The police have also arrested the youth with whom the girl was having an affair. He was also a resident of Jaunpur district and was working as a tailor.

As per the police investigation, the incident took place on the intervening night of June 11 and 12. It all started with a heated argument that took place between the girl and her family members. As a result of the intense discussion, the girl’s mother along with her two sisters took the girl to an isolated place on the pretext of meeting someone. Her brothers and father were already present on the spot without her knowledge. Once the girl reached there, the elder brother then slit her throat with a sharp edged weapon as others kept a hold on her, Mishra told.

The body was then dumped another 100 metres away from the spot. It was discovered by the villagers next morning who then informed the police.

The girls’ father works in Allahabad while her brothers work as daily wage labourers.
