Kannauj: Ittar has been a traditional product of Kannauj since the days of Harshvardhana, who ruled Kannauj between 606 and 647 BC and encouraged development of fragrances here.  Even today, ittar is prepared here using the ancient deg bhapka method.

However, the perfume industry has declined in the region in recent times.  The rising demand for alcohol-based fragrances has made the sellers and manufacturers insecure about their future.

The UP CM Ahkilesh Yadav’s visit last month to Grasse inFrance was aimed at saving the perfume industry in the state. Accompanied by his wife, Kannauj MP Dimple Yadav, and three others, the UP CM spent three days in the perfume capital of the world to facilitate trade between India and France.
