Chokpot: The Election Commission of India announced on May 29 that the bye poll to the Chokpot (ST) constituency will be held on June 27.

The seat fell vacant following the demise of the Garo National Council (GNC) legislator Clifford Marak on February this year.

The bye-election for the vacant seat will be unique as the widows of two political leaders will be pitted against each other.

NCP is planning to field Bluebell R Sangma, widow of former legislator Mason Singh Sangma, who died in September 2012, while GNC is likely to field Kalpana Sangma, wife of late Clifford Marak, as its candidate from the Chokpot seat.

The ECI issued a notice declaring that the model code of conduct will be initiated in the district where the election is going to be held.

The notification for the bye polls would be issued on June 3 and the starting date of filing nominations would start on the same day. The end date of filing of nominations is June 10. The last date of withdrawal is June 13.

Counting of votes would start on June 30, using electoral rolls with reference to January 1 as qualifying date.
