Rampur: Struggling to protect their houses from being demolished in Rampur, over 800 Valmikis, “converted” to Islam on Tuesday, after receiving threats, a week ago. They said that they would have no choice but to change their belief and picked Ambedkar's 124th birth anniversary to embrace the Islam.

Allegedly few days back, the Civic establishments had marked their houses. Their houses were to be destroyed for a shopping mall and have the support of UP Minister, Azam Khan, the inhabitants said. Conversely, Chandra Prakash Tripathi, Rampur District Magistrate denied commenting on the issue.

“Those converting to Islam should understand that this is not going to help them in any manner. Encroachment of public land in any form by any community is totally unacceptable. In Rampur, the majority of those evicted from government lands are Muslims,” said Azam Khan's media in-charge Fasahat Ali Khan to TOI.

“A municipal employee had come to our locality a few days ago and asked us to vacate our houses. When we expressed our inability to do so, he advised us to convert to Islam in order to save our houses from being brought down. For us, it made sense because a few settlements belonging to the minority community in our vicinity have been spared the demolition.” Bhim Anarya - a resident of Valmiki Basti, who embraced Islam.

The Valmikis wore skull caps and professed that they were from this time to be considered Muslims when a cleric, who was to help in their conversion didn't come.
