Italian designers have devised a bio-degradable burial pod that will convert its human remains into nutrients for a tree.

Designers Anna Citelli and Raoul Bretzel have developed ‘Capsula Mundi’ burial project. It involves encasing a corpse in an egg-shaped seed capsule and then burying it underground, with a tree on top.

As the body decomposes, the tree would gather nutrients from the decomposing pod and grow.
The pod is made of biodegradable starch plastic in which the body is put in a foetal position. The starch is taken from plants like potatoes and corn.

The tree is chosen when the person is alive; relatives and friends look after it when death occurs.
According to the team, planting different kinds of trees beside each other will create a forest.
“A cemetery will no longer be full of tombstones and will become a sacred forest," the designers said.

Environmental preservation will be boosted with such measures. A death will mark the sprouting of a tree. Planting trees is like giving life to a human being. Plants consume carbon dioxide and release oxygen. They make the atmosphere friendlier for human beings.

People will connect themselves with nature and respect it. You will realize that after death your body is providing manure to a plant, you are becoming a part of nature (though it is only symbolical).

It will create a memorial park full of beautiful trees. There will not be any need to create a graveyard, or cremation ground, or coffins, or make arrangements for a cremation pyre.
Global warming could be reduced.

It will liberate us of all the rituals (ceremony, mourning etc.) that follow after the death of a person. People do not have time. They want to move on.
Also, because we have more and more of nuclear families, there are no elders to guide through the religious rites and rituals.

Utilizing the dead body of a person to grow a tree is really a worthy thing in itself. It will also bring conserve the environment.
