Mohanpur, Rohtas: A 15 year old boy belonging to a Scheduled caste family in Bihar was burnt alive by a group of upper caste men as his goat strayed into the fields of one of them.

This was the third such incident of violence against Mahadalit community in the past three weeks, as in September, more than 150 Dalits were forced to flee a village in Gaya after a member of their community was killed followed by another incident on October 9, when six Dalit women were allegedly raped in Bhojpur. The recent incident took place on Wednesday, 15 October, as Sai Ram, son of a daily wage labourer Jiut Ram, was having his lunch with his mentally unstable brother Munna Ram, leaving the goats outside to graze. The goats strayed away and entered the fields of the Sanjay Singh alias Kunkun Singh (45), who enjoys an affluent position in the village.

Although goats belonging to other community had also entered his fields, he lost his cool after discovering it that the goats belonged to Sai Ram.

Raging with anger and shouting expletives, Singh entered Jiut Ram’s house and started beating Munna Ram. On being protested by Sai Ram, Singh picked up a kerosene container and poured it on Sai Ram. He later set the boy on fire and left.
Sai was taken to Bikramganj Hospital though he couldn’t survive the incident.

The accused has been arrested the following day and has been charged with murder as well as under provisions of the SC/ST Act. The state government offered a compensation of Rs. 2.81 lakh to the victim’s family. Jiut Ram, however, has refused the money saying that it is of no use to him now that he has lost his son.
